Can Faith and Politics Coexist?

  • UVA Center for Politics 655 Leonard Sandridge Road. Charlottesville, VA 22903 (map)

Attend an evening conversation exploring one of the most enduring questions in public life:

Can faith and politics coexist?
The discussion will feature Frank B. Atkinson, author of the new political novel The Lion's Den: Renewing Our Democracy by Renewing Ourselves, in conversation with Rev. Dr. Corey Widmer, Lead Pastor of Third Church in Richmond. Using The Lion's Den as a starting point, they'll explore character, conscience, citizenship, and what happens when faith, ambition, loyalty, and political life collide.

Frank Atkinson is a Richmond lawyer, consultant, and author of college-level texts on political history. He’s served in the Justice Department, guided statewide political campaigns, and chaired a national commission marking one of American history’s greatest events. He now writes books about politics and the nation’s path to democratic renewal through principled and practical choices.

You do not need to read the book ahead of time to attend this event.

Rev. Dr. Corey Widmer is a Hoo, receiving his bachelors in Religious Studies before receiving his M. Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and PhD in Theology and Missiology from VU Amsterdam. Before assuming his position at Third Church, he helped cofound and pastor East End Fellowship, a multi-ethnic congregation in the East End of Richmond.

From its founding, Theological Horizons has made room at the table for voices that challenge and enlarge us. We offer information about this conversation as an invitation to thoughtful engagement rather than an endorsement, trusting that attentive listening is itself a practice of faith.
