Faith & Work: Beauty in Brokenness

I love instances where art can bring people together...I love that art can bring out different things for different people at different times.
— Brittany Fan

Our first Faith & Work lunch of the year was with Brittany Fan who was in conversation with her sister, Ashley Fan (‘24), our Leadership Associate!

Brittany Fan (‘15) is a visual artist, photographer, and designer based in Charlottesville, VA. Having a love of all things creative, her practices include painting & illustration, photography, ceramics, floral design, and last but not least, her pursuit of print and magazine design as a senior designer at Journey Group. Through all of these practices, she seeks to capture and illuminate stories, with the belief that storytelling and meaning-making are crucial to our understanding of and experience of the world in all its beauty and brokenness.

Art is a really good way for people to have thoughtful engagement because it tends to bridge where other conversations might not be able to. And I think that we are in a culture right now that wants to label things, to put things into boxes...art can soften the walls and bring people to a place where they are a little more open to mystery, open to paying attention to something they might not otherwise look toward.
