Why Horizons Fellows? | Akua Tenkorang ‘26
During my time as a Horizons Fellow, I have had the opportunity to learn about all kinds of topics, from how we determine our vocation to racial reconciliation to how we love those with whom we disagree. I got to write a letter to my future self, stretch my understanding of and openness to different theological perspectives, and most of all, do all of this with a great cohort of students.
My favorite part of Horizons has been the monthly conversations we have over dinner. We all come from different social, ethnic, political, academic, and theological backgrounds, yet we have the common ground of deep respect for one another because we are all treated in God’s image. This common belief allows us to discuss very sensitive and controversial issues without strife or bitterness. I have been stretched to see others’ perspectives theologically, politically, and socially, and simultaneously grow close friendships and respect for my peers.
For UVA students who may be interested, if you’ve never heard of Horizons Fellows or are on the fence about joining, I would encourage you to try it out! Your perspectives are welcome here and you will learn so much about yourself, your calling, and others. You can be yourself while learning more about what makes you you and engage in deep introspection and reflection with others.
