Thank you, Fellows | Fefe King ‘26
I first joined the Fellows program my second year at UVA, and I thank God for the blessing it has been in my life. I began as a Perkins Fellow in 2023, starting off the year with the traditional Perkins Plunge and fellowship at Christy’s farm. As we walked around Charlottesville, visiting our future volunteer sites and learning about the history of the town, I felt such excitement and anticipation for what the year would bring. I knew that the Lord had given me a unique opportunity to grow and learn alongside my fellow students who had a heart for justice and service.
Throughout my time as a Perkins Fellow, I have served at a local non-profit providing musical resources to underserved kids in Charlottesville. Through this work, I witnessed how providing access to music and arts to kids who may otherwise not have the opportunity creates lifelong positive impacts. I have been comforted by the words of John Perkins and his children whose wisdom, humility, and faith have encouraged me upon every encounter. Their example reminded me that justice work is not separate from faith, but a reflection of it.
I have also traveled to three different states to attend the Christian Community Development Association national gathering, where I grew in my understanding of important community justice issues such as affordable housing, maternal health, food equity, and neighborhood restoration. These experiences expanded my perspective and strengthened my desire to pursue work that serves both people and communities with dignity and love.
As a Horizons Fellow, I have spent time praying and reflecting on God’s plan for my life as I approach the end of my undergraduate years, and I have been deeply grateful for the wisdom, encouragement, and guidance offered by my mentor.
After many volunteer hours, countless conversations at Christy’s house, and annual trips to CCDA, I can confidently say that my life has been changed for the better. Most importantly, I have come to better understand God’s heart for the world and the ways He calls each of us to be faithful stewards of His love and justice. I am so grateful for the relationships that have been formed, the space for honest and vulnerable conversations, and the lessons that will stay with me far beyond college.
I hope to continue carrying the spirit of Fellows with me wherever I go, striving to be a good neighbor, a thoughtful listener, and a faithful servant of God.
